Field Trip: Babyfoot Lake Botanical Area in the Kalmiopsis Wilderness
Meeting Location: Albertson’s parking lot, 1690 Allen Creek Rd, Grants Pass 9am
Trip leaders: Karen Brown, Matt Dybala, and Kathryn Connelly
Join the Siskiyou Plant Explorers on a trip to the Babyfoot Lake Botanical Area, nestled in the eastern edge of the Kalmiopsis Wilderness at the end (almost) of Eight Dollar Mountain Road. This 2.4 mile round-trip trail is somewhat rocky, and descends steadily 360’ to the three-acre lake. The trail initially passes through an area burned intensely in the 2002 Biscuit Fire, giving us a great opportunity to talk about fire ecology and landscape recovery. With few wildflowers to distract us, we’ll focus on conifers, notably Brewer’s spruce (Picea breweriana) and Port Orford-cedar (Chamaecyparis lawsoniana), along with the amazing variety of shrubs in this fire-adapted serpentine landscape.
The drive to the trailhead takes about an hour and fifteen minutes from Grants Pass. Be prepared for any weather, wear sturdy shoes, bring lunch and water, and hiking poles if you need them. There will be some off-trail exploration around the lake.
