DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, July 18\, 9:00 am – 4:00 pm\nEvent: Newberry National Volcanic Monument Rare Plant Survey\nLeader: Stu Garrett\nLocation: Newberry National Volcanic Monument  \nJoin the High Desert Chapter of NPSO on Saturday\, July 18 to visit the Newberry National Volcanic Monument and perform a census of the pumice grape-fern (Botrychium pumicola). This member of the fern family is on the rare list for the State of Oregon and is being monitored by the Deschutes National Forest. We will hike under a mile on a good trail with under 1000 feet elevation gain. We will meet to carpool at 9:00 at a pre-determined spot. Roads are fine for a Subaru or equivalent. We will return to Bend by 4:00 pm. Hiker numbers will be limited to avoid trampling. Bring a lunch and liquids. There is not much shade. Hiking boots are recommended. No pets. The Reserve supports California pitcher plants and round-leaf sundews. We will be removing some brush and weeds. Loppers\, clippers\, and gloves will be supplied. \nPlease arrive a few minutes early to sign in. We will carpool to the trailhead. Lunch will be provided by the Friends of South Slough after the work party.

Join us for the inaugural plant keying party! As a group we will take plants through the dichotomous key to confidently identify the specimen. SOU will provide dissecting scopes and identification guides. All skill levels are welcome! Feel free to bring in a sample of a mystery plant (at least 10 sample cuttings \, so we can all work collaboratively to identify your plant; please no garden ornamentals)\, or work on a plant provided by the organizer.   If you have a plant to bring\, please do not overharvest wild plants. Make notes on when and where you collected. If you have a shrubby plant or tree\, take photos and additional notes. We will meet in Sisters\, OR to discuss Oregon Rare Species Spotters\, learn how to collect data with Survey123\, and then practice monitoring rare plants. There will be an outdoor component to the training to practice our new skills\, so please come prepared for any weather conditions. This training is perfect for people interested in finding rare plants\, contributing to their conservation\, and collecting detailed population information. This training is supported by the NPSO High Desert Chapter\, with a suggested donation of $20 for members and $30 for non-members to help cover travel costs for our instructor.
