SUMMARY:Field Trip: Siskiyou Plant Explorers\, Lower Grayback Mountain Loop
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, November 7\, 9:00 am – 2:00 pm\nField Trip: Siskiyou Plant Explorers\, Lower Grayback Mountain Loop\nTrip leader: Matt Dybala\nMeeting Location: Williams Grange\, 20100 Williams Hwy\, Williams OR 97544 \nCome join the Siskiyou Plant Explorers on our last outing of the year as we focus on native Siskiyou plant and mushroom identification. Participants will learn about various symbiotic relationships between plants and fungi as we explore different habitats\, such as madrone/black ash mixed hardwood forest\, alder/bigleaf maple riparian areas\, and Douglas-fir mixed conifer forests. Along the way\, Matt will share terminology used to describe basic macroscopic features of fungi and how to navigate identification keys in common field guides to successfully identify mushroom genera. November is one of the best months to observe fruiting bodies in southern Oregon at low to mid elevations\, while also enjoying a spectacular fall display of colorful leaves. This is a moderate 2-mile loop hike that begins at the Grayback Mountain Trailhead\, which is a short 10-minute drive from our meeting location at the Williams Grange. The initial first mile includes sections with a steady elevation gain of 300 feet. We will loop back to the parking area by hiking along upper Rock Creek road on our return. \nIf you are interested in joining\, please send an email in advance to siskiyouplants@gmail.

SUMMARY:Program: Do you like to vacuum outdoors? A detailed account of the ecological importance\, cultivation and use in restoration of early blue violet (Viola adunca).
DESCRIPTION:Monday\, November 9\, 7:30 pm – 8:30 pm\nProgram: Do you like to vacuum outdoors? A detailed account of the ecological importance\, cultivation and use in restoration of early blue violet (Viola adunca).\nPresenter: Mara Friddle\, Native Plant Farm Manager for the Institute for Applied Ecology\nLocation: Cordley Hall Room 2602\, Oregon State University (or on Zoom) \nThe threatened Oregon silverspot butterfly larvae rely on the early blue violet as their sole food source\, but the butterfly recovery effort is so much bigger than just tossing more violet seed out on the coast. This talk will illustrate the tremendous effort performed by restoration practitioners\, plant materials producers\, the Oregon Zoo\, and even incarcerated individuals at the Coffee Creek Correctional Facility all working in concert to help the Oregon silverspot butterfly thrive once again. \nRegister in advance for this meeting: https://us06web.zoom.us/meeting/register/wzHZocQhTkWIPSiTgS6sSw.

SUMMARY:Event: Peck’s Penstemon Habitat Improvement Post-Fire Native Planting
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, November 10\, 9:00 am – 3:30 pm\nEvent: Peck’s Penstemon Habitat Improvement Post-Fire Native Planting\nLocation: 12 miles NE of Sisters\, 44.415340\, -121.423391 \nWant to help support native habitat of sensitive Peck’s Penstemon populations? Come join FS employees and youth crews in the westernmost portion of the Crooked River National Grassland which burned at higher severity during the 2021 Grandview and 2025 Flat wildfires. We will be planting bunchgrasses and forbs along sensitive plant populations infested by invasive annual grasses (medusahead rye and cheatgrass) which have increased in cover post-wildfire. Installation of native plants will help promote and support native habitat in burned areas that are more vulnerable to annual grass dominance. \nDue to the risk of standing dead trees in the area\, please bring a hard hat if possible. Please ensure you bring appropriate field work clothes\, shoes\, and work gloves. Bring plenty of water\, snacks\, and lunch. This is a rain or shine event. \nRSVP here.

There are at least 16 species of Eriogonumthat grow in the Siskiyou Mountains\, and 26 overall Eriogonum taxa when you include varieties. Native buckwheats come in many shapes and sizes. Some species are large\, showy\, well-known and well-loved\, while others are rare and seldom seen\, or they are small annuals that are often overlooked. Native buckwheats\, found in most habitats in the Siskiyou Mountains\, play a key role in our local ecosystems and are vital for pollinator and bird species. Come learn about the incredible diversity of native buckwheats in the Siskiyou Mountains! \nSuzie Savoie is a native seed collector and co-owner of Klamath-Siskiyou Native Seeds and is a former Conservation Chair for the Siskiyou Chapter Native Plant Society of Oregon.
