SUMMARY:Field Trip: King Mountain Area of Critical Environmental Concern
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, June 14\, Leave Roseburg 8:00 am – late afternoon\nField Trip: King Mountain Area of Critical Environmental Concern\nLocation: East of Wolf Creek along the Interstate 5 corridor \nThis area has never disappointed photographers\, hikers\, or plant enthusiasts due to the variety of plant species spotted. Situated at an elevation of 5\,033 feet\, roughly 8.5 air miles east of Wolf Creek\, this rocky subalpine mountain top offers expansive views of the Klamath Mountains in every direction. We will see a multitude of “serpentine” tolerant species. Look for the rarely seen Hall’s violet. A trail with a slight uphill climb leads to the botanical garden. Dress for (often cold) weather. No facilities are nearby. This field trip is a real favorite to our regular participants. \nAll Field Trips: Reservations are required. We ask that you text or call Rod Trotter at 541-672-1907 or text or call Donna Rawson at 541-643-0364 to reserve a spot and again the night before the trip to confirm your plan to attend and to be sure the schedule has not changed. Please join us.

SUMMARY:Field Trip: Iron Mountain and Cone Peak
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, June 28th\, 8:00 am – late afternoon \nField Trip: Iron Mountain and Cone Peak \nLeaders: Dan Luoma and Joyce Eberhart \nWe will hike the Iron Mountain-Cone Peak loop\, identifying wildflowers in this botanical hotspot. Over 200 species of vascular plants have been recorded across this botanically rich trail west of Santiam Pass. Wildflowers of the Western Cascades (Ross and Chambers\, 1988) focuses on the flora of this area. A delightful post about the area by Tanya Harvey can be read here: https://westerncascades.com/2019/06/18/a-rainbow-of-colors-at-cone-peak-and-iron-mountain/.  Tanya’s plant list is here: https://westerncascades.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Iron-Mountain-Cone-Peak-plant-list.pdf \nThe loop is about 5 miles through moderately difficult terrain and will take all day since we will walk slowly looking at so many flowers. There is about a 1\,000-foot elevation gain\, mostly in the first one-third of the hike. Bring a lunch and water\, dress for the weather\, and wear sturdy shoes (there may still be snow drifts). \nMeet for carpooling at 8:00 am at the Oregon State University\, Wilkinson Hall parking lot (44.5692746\, -123.2810976) southwest of Java Crew Coffee at 26th and Monroe. Entrance to the parking lot is on 27th Street south of NW Jackson Ave. For more information\, contact Dan: lu****@*********te.edu. Please leave furry friends at home.

SUMMARY:Field Trip: Bilger Ridge in the North Myrtle Creek watershed
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, June 28\, Leave Roseburg at 9:00 am- early afternoon\nField Trip: Bilger Ridge in the North Myrtle Creek watershed \nIt is time for our yearly trek to BiIger Ridge to see our very own rare and beautiful mariposa lily\, Calochortus coxii. We have special permission from the Bureau of Land Management to visit this location. The walk is slightly uphill but easy\, and there is ample parking near the flowers. This Calochortus is one of the rarest flowers in the world\, and it was discovered and named after one of our Umpqua Valley Chapter members. It grows only in a 5-mile area on a special serpentine range on the ridges between Riddle and Myrtle Creek\, Oregon. It is listed on Oregon’s Rare and Endangered Species List. Look for a variety of other species there including Brewer’s lupine\, death camas (Anticlea elegans) and Henderson’s stars. \nErica\, a botanist with the Bureau of Land Management\, will accompany us on this trip. \nSouth county folks can meet us at Dollar General Store\, 649 N Myrtle Rd at 9:30.

SUMMARY:Field Trip: Soapstone Lake
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, July 5\, 9:00 am – 3:00 pm\nField Trip: Soapstone Lake\nLeader: Kira Taylor\nLocation: Clatsop State Forest (carpooling will be from Banks). \nVenture out to a lesser-visited part of the Clatsop State Forest for a 3 mile loop hike around a small woodland lake. This moderate trail passes through thinned second-growth forest\, skirts around Soapstone Meadow and a few remnant pioneer-planted cherry trees\, then rises and falls (elevation gain about 300 feet) on its way to meet the lake as it passes between large old hemlock and Sitka spruce trees. At the lake\, we’ll see huge skunk cabbage\, northern bugleweed\, orange honeysuckle\, Hall’s false rue anemone\, and if we’re lucky\, tiny roundleaf sundew growing on the logs jutting out into the lake! \nThe carpool will meet at Banks around 9:00\, about an hour’s drive to the trailhead. Carpool drivers are advised to bring no valuables and leave nothing visible in vehicles; occasional break-ins have been historically reported at this trailhead. Bring lunch\, and maybe binoculars for long-distance sundew spotting. \nMessage Kira at ki*********@***il.com to register or with any questions. Limited to ten participants. A waiting list will be kept.

SUMMARY:Event: Plant Survey
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, July 8\, 8:30 am\nEvent: Plant Survey\nLeader: Jeanne at js******@*****er.net.\nLocation: Floras Lake \nThe Bureau of Land Management has invited the NPSO South Coast Chapter to assist with monitoring silvery phacelia (Phacelia argentea) on July 8 at Floras Lake. Monitoring will consist of laying out tape measures to form a grid\, finding all plants within each grid section\, and measuring and recording them. Typically monitoring takes 2-3 hours. Please RSVP to Jeanne at js******@*****er.net. \nThe beautiful site is on the sandy wind-swept shore of Floras Lake adjacent to Boice Cope Park at the north end of Curry County just shy of the Pacific Ocean. From Hwy 101\, turn west onto Floras Lake Loop\, then right on Floras Lake Road. Park on the road shoulder across from the Boice Cope County Park Campground and walk a short distance down the hill to the bridge in Boice Cope Park. There is a day use fee to park by the bridge. Cross the bridge and walk out the trail until you see people working to the right of the trail. Coarse sand covers the area\, and volunteers will hike a short trail to the population.\nSilvery phacelia is listed as threatened in Oregon. Seaside gilia\, an endangered plant\, and beach cryptantha\, a rare plant\, are also on the site. \nFor more information on silvery phacelia\, see: OregonFlora Phacelia argentea

This is a steep and moderately difficult\, though short\, hike; gaining over 700 feet in three quarters of a mile. We’ll have lunch at the summit viewpoint amongst the copperbush and scalloped onion before heading back down. A combination of good hiking shoes\, sure-footed trail skills\, and/or trekking poles is highly encouraged. \nWe’ll meet up for a carpool in Banks at 9:00 am before making the 1-hour drive to the trailhead. SUMMARY:Field Trip: Siskiyou Plant Explorers Hike to McDonald Peak
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, July 12\, 9:00 am – 3:00 pm\nField Trip: Siskiyou Plant Explorers Hike to McDonald Peak\nLeader: Al Collinet\nMeeting Location: Rite Aid Pharmacy parking lot at 9:00 am\, 2341 Ashland St.\, Ashland\, OR  \nWe will be going a little earlier this year to try to catch the giant frasera or monument plant (Frasera speciosa)\, and Howell’s tauschia (Tauschia howellii) in flower. Howell’s tauschia is a rare plant in Southwest Oregon and is found near the peak of McDonald Peak. I will share my Southwest Oregon guide to the four mountain ashes (Sorbus sp.) and four owl clovers (Orthocarpus spp.). I have created a list of species seen on three different outings to McDonald Peak with additions from the Oregon Flora list. (I got the idea from Karen Brown.) The last time we were at McDonald Peak\, a Hummingbird Hawk Moth\, a Sheep Moth\, and an Anise Swallowtail visited us. They know where to find good flowers too! The botany hike is 3 miles round trip with a maximum of 400 feet in elevation gain. Driving time to the trailhead is about 40 minutes. Please come prepared with plenty of food\, water\, and suitable footwear.
