She has created landscapes small enough to step across and large enough to get lost in. Researching plants for a design project\, she came across the name of a female plant explorer working in the late 1700s. As she found more stories of forgotten women doing important work in the field\, she knew those stories had to be told. The mission of this newly formed land trust “is to conserve and restore the lands and waters of the mid to northern Willamette River Basin” through purchasing and receiving donated land for permanent protection. The Trust will acquire lands along Willamette River sub-basins such as the Clackamas\, Molalla\, Pudding\, and Yamhill Watersheds\, and points southward which to date have not had a local land trust. Travis was the Riverkeeper and Executive Director of Willamette Riverkeeper for 24 years. He is the author of the Willamette River Field Guide\, Willamette River Greenways\, and Willamette Water Trail Guides. DESCRIPTION:Monday\, October 21\, 2024\, 7:00 pm – 8:00 pm \nPresentation: Climate Warming Effects on Pacific Northwest Prairie Species: Variable Phenological and Reproductive Response Among Species and Across the Landscape\nSpeaker: Sarah Erskine\, PhD candidate in the Institute of Ecology and Evolution\, University of Oregon\nLocation: Amazon Community Center\, 2700 Hilyard St.\, Eugene \nWhile climate change affects species in numerous ways\, one of the most observable effects is the shifting of phenological events\, such as the timing of germination or flowering. Increasing temperatures and drought have generally led to earlier leaf out and flowering times\, but there is also great variation in how species shift their phenology\, even among co-occurring species. This talk will describe how many of our local prairie wildflowers are shifting their life cycles with climate warming\, how these shifts vary across the landscape with environmental heterogeneity\, and how they may be connected to other plant responses to climate change. \nSarah Erskine is a PhD candidate in the Institute of Ecology and Evolution at the University of Oregon where she studies how climate warming restructures plant interactions through phenological shifts. Prior to graduate school\, she worked as a field ecologist and botanist all across the western U.S. from the Mojave Desert to the Oregon Coast Range surveying plants and pollinators. Her work in Pacific Northwest prairies has included surveying Taylor’s checkerspot and Fender’s blue butterflies and their host plants\, and her current research uses many annual flower species native to the Willamette Valley. She enjoys thinking about how plant communities will change with climate change and hopes to inform restoration efforts with her research.

This is our second volunteer trail work event at Hundred Acre Wood\, and fully supported by the City of Coquille. A Portland Chapter member Jane Hartline\, the owner of Sauvie Island Natives Nursery will contribute 10% on these days for any sale in which NPSO is mentioned at the time of checkout. Funds raised will go toward 2025 Annual Meeting expenses . \nVisits to the nursery are by appointment only with online scheduling on the Sauvie Island Natives website. (Zoom link in next Bulletin)   \nThe evolution of separate sexes is widespread in flowering plants. Gynodioecy\, which is the coexistence of female and hermaphroditic individuals\, is often considered a transitional stage in the evolutionary pathway from hermaphrodism to separate sexes\, yet the precise genetic and ecological mechanisms remain unclear. Insects mediate a variety of ecological processes in plants that have consequences on plant survival\, reproduction\, and evolution. Meadow checkermallow (Sidalcea campestris) is a gynodioecious species endemic to Oregon’s Willamette Valley that is a critical resource to native prairie pollinators and suffers high rates of pre-dispersal seed predation by a specialist weevil (Macrorhoptus sidalceae). In this presentation\, Oregon State University PhD student Brooklyn Richards will be presenting her research on plant-insect interactions that potentially influence the mating system dynamics of S. campestris.

DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, November 14\, 6:30 pm – 7:30 pm\nZoom Program: Restoring threatened and endangered Oregon native plants \nSara Alaica\, restoration ecologist at the Institute for Applied Ecology\, will give a Zoom presentation about her work at the Institute restoring rare plants in the Willamette Valley. She will share the steps in the restoration process\, the challenge working with special status plants such as Kincaid’s lupine and Willamette daisy\, and the progress made so far.  Sara has eight years of experience writing and implementing restoration plans across a variety of habitat types and has worked with several threatened and endangered plant species including Kincaid’s lupine\, thin-leaved peavine\, and the New England bulrush. Sara received her MSc in Ecological Restoration from Simon Frasier University and is a Certified Ecological Restoration Practitioner. Registration is required. DESCRIPTION:Monday\, November 18\, 2024\, 7:00 pm – 8:00 pm \nTitle: What Does it Mean to be a Species in “the Paintbrushes?”\nPresenter: Dr. Sarah Jacobs\, a Specialist in our Western Flora\, Assistant Curator of Botany and Howell Chair of Western North American Botany California Academy of Sciences\nLocation: Via Zoom. For information\, please visit Events at: http://emerald. npsoregon.org. \nThe genus Castilleja\, also known as “the paintbrushes\,” is an iconic group of western wildflowers whose taxonomy has been historically challenging. My work aims to untangle species relationships to understand the evolution of this charismatic group of plants. My talk will cover what we do and don’t know about the biology\, physiology\, and evolution of Castilleja\, as well as how we are beginning to quantify exactly why these species are so hard to tell apart. Along the way\, we will ponder: What does it mean to be a species and how do we identify them? How do our expectations of species compare with what we see in the world around us? How does all this fit into our worldview of conservation and management? \nDr. Sarah Jacobs grew up in rural Arkansas and attended the University of Arkansas where she earned a bachelor’s degree in biology. A chance encounter in a plant diversity class led to volunteering and later a summer job at the University of Arkansas Herbarium\, which ultimately led to a master’s degree at Washington State University\, a brief stint with the U.S. Forest Service in Oregon\, and a PhD at the University of Idaho. Sarah worked with Dr. Felipe Zapata at University of California Los Angeles after graduating and accepted her current position at the California Academy of Sciences in 2019. She started her job in the fall of 2020 and has been building her research program since then. Herbaria and collections-based research have been central to developing her interests\, her studies\, and now her profession.

The first is a study of how climate change may be impacting understory plants of our region. And the second will focus on how the dominant conifers are responding to decades of fire suppression and climate change. \nErik is a Professor Biology at Cal Poly Humboldt in Arcata\, CA. He has been conducting research in southwestern Oregon and northern California for more than 30 years. Some of his past work has been focused on western trillium\, Port Orford cedar\, serpentine fens\, and tree communities of the region.Erik was an undergraduate at Ithaca College and completed his PhD at the University of Michigan.
