DESCRIPTION:Friday\, July 26\, 9:00 am – 12:00 pm\nField Trip: Sharon Fen Preserve\nTrip leader: Rebekah Bergkoetter \nRebekah Bergkoetter from Southern Oregon Land Conservancy invites you to join a small group hike to an uncommon wetland in the region\, a freshwater fen near Ashland and Howard Prairie. This secluded property features unique plants including sundew\, bog bean\, and marsh cinquefoil. Inaccessible to the public\, the visit will be a rugged trek and off-trail hiking to see the quaking fen mats and unusual habitats. Please meet for carpooling at 9:00 am at the Ashland Rite-Aid. There will be a thirty-minute drive each direction\, and some dirt road travel suitable for all-wheel or 4-wheel drive vehicles only. Two vehicles will be provided by Southern Oregon Land Conservancy for carpooling. Participants should bring lunch\, water\, and be comfortable traveling cross-country in wetlands and forests with obstacles and insecure footing. The area features high mountain meadows where the wildflowers are still blooming. Rod Trotter will be our guide. We will be looking for Cascade lily\, orchids\, scarlet gilia\, Columbia lily\, and Veratrum sp. Forty-three species have been listed for this area on past trips. \nReservations are required; call Rod Trotter at 541-672-1907 or Donna Rawson at 541-643-0364 at least one day before the field trips. It is imperative that you call Rod or Donna again the night before the trip to confirm your plans to attend and to confirm the schedule has not changed. DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, July 27\, 10:00 AM\nField Trip: Whaleshead – Indian Sands Hike \nLeader: Olivia Dethlefsen\nLocation: Whaleshead Beach (Upper parking lot) \nWe will gather at the upper parking lot for Whaleshead Beach (At the top of the hill\, not the parking near the beach). The hike will begin at 10:15 and is expected to take at least two to three hours depending on how far participants want to go. This will be a strenuous hike of about three to four miles\, with considerable elevation change. \nThe plan is to take the coast trail north to the vicinity of a pullout between Whalehead Beach and the large Indian Sands parking lot. In this area\, we will find orange bush monkeyflower near the northern edge of their range\, expected to be blooming in late July. \nAt this point we have the option of doing a longer hike all the way to the bluffs at Indian Sands\, which would be around six miles total\, increasing the hiking time to five or six hours\, or we can turn back here depending on group interest. There is also the option to take a short but steep walk and see the sea bluffs on the tip of Whaleshead itself. \nPlease be aware that there may be poison oak in places along the trail. DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, August 3\,  8:30 am – 5:30 pm\nField Trip: Gold Lake Bog\nLeaders: Jenny Moore\, Middle Fork District Botanist and Jenny Lippert\, Retired Forest Service Botanist \nJoin botanists Jenny Moore and Jenny Lippert for a foray into the botanical wonderland of Gold Lake Bog\, which was designated as a Research Natural Area in 1965. This area hosts several rare botanical species such as Rannoch-rush (Scheuchzeria palustris)\, several species of the carnivorous bladderworts (Utricularia intermedia\, U. minor\, and U. vulgaris)\, and other fun fen species such as sundews\, bog laurel\, bog birch\, and of course Sphagnum sp. moss. Bring a walking stick or poles if needed\, as we will be walking downhill from the trail into the bog and cross-country once there. Approximate roundtrip is 4 miles. Plan to get your feet wet or wear rubber boots. Bring a lunch and water\, and a sun hat as there is little shade. Sign up here

Plants the group may see include Drosera sp.\, a rare Carex sp.\, and Vaccinium sp. to name just a few. Hiking is moderately difficult with some trip hazards. The ground is fairly level with deep holes and there will be downed slick logs and soft marshy moss mats. Water level varies so rubber boots or shoes that can get wet are recommended for this hike. Please come prepared: bring water and lunch. DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, August 17th\, 9:00 am – 3:30 pm (including drive time)\nField Trip: Beaver Creek State Natural Area and Ona Beach in Newport\nTrip Leader: Alexandria Kurowski \nEscape the late-summer heat with an easy field trip to a unique and diverse set of plant habitats! We’ll start the morning observing various wetland species such as sedges (Carex sp.)\, western water hemlock (Cicuta douglasii)\, and more on a brief hike through the Beaver Marsh area. After lunch\, we’ll travel over to Ona Beach across Highway 101 to see coastal species such as more sedges\, seaside sandwort (Honckenya peploides)\, American searocket (Cakile edentula)\, and hopefully many others!\nDue to South Beaver Creek Road being closed\, we’ll have a short (1/2 mile) hike to the boardwalk area from the visitor’s center at Beaver Creek\, and potentially another 0.3 miles down the Beaver Marsh Trail if the trail is dry enough. Afterwards\, we’ll drive over to Ona Beach parking area and walk to the beach from there\, about another 0.3 miles for a total of a little over a mile of walking for the entire trip. There is very minimal elevation gain. Please bring lunch and water\, dress appropriately for variable weather conditions (could be quite warm at the marsh and windy and cold at the beach)\, and I’d suggest bringing binoculars if you have an interest in birdwatching. \nWe will meet at the Oregon State University\, Wilkinson Hall parking lot (44.569\, -123.281) southwest of Java Crew Corvallis at 26th and Monroe at 9:00 am. Researching plants for a design project\, she came across the name of a female plant explorer working in the late 1700s. As she found more stories of forgotten women doing important work in the field\, she knew those stories had to be told. DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, October 17\, 6:30 pm – 7:30 pm\nVirtual Program: Willamette River Preservation Trust\nSpeaker: Travis Williams \nTravis Williams\, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Willamette River Preservation Trust\, will give a Zoom presentation about the Willamette River Preservation Trust. The mission of this newly formed land trust “is to conserve and restore the lands and waters of the mid to northern Willamette River Basin” through purchasing and receiving donated land for permanent protection. The Trust will acquire lands along Willamette River sub-basins such as the Clackamas\, Molalla\, Pudding\, and Yamhill Watersheds\, and points southward which to date have not had a local land trust. Travis was the Riverkeeper and Executive Director of Willamette Riverkeeper for 24 years. He is the author of the Willamette River Field Guide\, Willamette River Greenways\, and Willamette Water Trail Guides. DESCRIPTION:Monday\, October 21\, 2024\, 7:00 pm – 8:00 pm \nPresentation: Climate Warming Effects on Pacific Northwest Prairie Species: Variable Phenological and Reproductive Response Among Species and Across the Landscape\nSpeaker: Sarah Erskine\, PhD candidate in the Institute of Ecology and Evolution\, University of Oregon\nLocation: Amazon Community Center\, 2700 Hilyard St.\, Eugene \nWhile climate change affects species in numerous ways\, one of the most observable effects is the shifting of phenological events\, such as the timing of germination or flowering. Increasing temperatures and drought have generally led to earlier leaf out and flowering times\, but there is also great variation in how species shift their phenology\, even among co-occurring species. This talk will describe how many of our local prairie wildflowers are shifting their life cycles with climate warming\, how these shifts vary across the landscape with environmental heterogeneity\, and how they may be connected to other plant responses to climate change. \nSarah Erskine is a PhD candidate in the Institute of Ecology and Evolution at the University of Oregon where she studies how climate warming restructures plant interactions through phenological shifts. Prior to graduate school\, she worked as a field ecologist and botanist all across the western U.S. from the Mojave Desert to the Oregon Coast Range surveying plants and pollinators. Her work in Pacific Northwest prairies has included surveying Taylor’s checkerspot and Fender’s blue butterflies and their host plants\, and her current research uses many annual flower species native to the Willamette Valley. She enjoys thinking about how plant communities will change with climate change and hopes to inform restoration efforts with her research.

DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, October 27\, 9:00 am – 5:00 pm\nField Trip: Metolius River Trail \nMatt Palmquist and Elliot Drake-Maurer will lead a relaxed\, 3-mile stroll along the Metolius River trail. This “larch march” will feature the golden needles of the Western Larch\, Oregon’s only native deciduous conifer\, as well as a variety of other conifers. The trail is mostly flat and there will be ample time to admire the colors and the beauty of the river. Matt Palmquist is a park ranger at Silver Falls State Park\, who loves viewing and teaching about Oregon’s native plants. Elliot Drake-Maurer is an outdoor education specialist with the OSU Extension Service Outdoor School office. White Oak grows more than twenty species of native woody plants\, primarily for riparian restoration projects around the Rogue Valley. White Oak is also a diverse organic farm\, producing seed crops\, food for the local schools and food banks\, as well as hosting children’s education programs. This is our second volunteer trail work event at Hundred Acre Wood\, and fully supported by the City of Coquille. More about the site:\nhttps://cityofcoquille.org/comm_services/100_acre_wood.php. \nBe sure to bring gloves\, sturdy shoes\, and comfortable clothing. This is a rain or shine event\, though high winds will cancel! Please plan to arrive prior to 9:00 am so you are ready for basic education and instruction starting at 9:00 am. The Wild Rivers Coast Mountain Bicycle Association tool trailer will be on site\, but we encourage folks to bring pruners\, loppers\, and hand saws as they will be the primary tools for ivy removal.
