SUMMARY:Hike: March BioBlitz: Marching into Spring
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, March 26\, 10:00 am\nHike: March BioBlitz: Marching into Spring\nHike Leaders: Lecia Schall and Cheryl Brock\nLocation: Whipple Creek Regional Park \nPlease join Lecia Schall and Cheryl Brock as we March forth into Spring at Whipple Creek Regional Park near Ridgefield\, WA. This hidden gem is a 300-acre park with lots of crisscrossing graveled trails which border the Whipple Creek drainage. We will be looking from the treetops of this unique\, temperate Douglas-fir and grand fir forest\, down to the soggy ground for signs of spring. Which are the first plants to flower and leaf out? This easy 2-3-mile hike will follow the main loop\, and explore some of the extra features and loops\, like cedar groves and a stone mill. It could be muddy\, so please wear proper footwear. Once we have our guest list\, we can arrange carpooling. Contact Lecia (Lisa) sc*********@***il.com to RSVP. Be sure to sign up for our NPSOPDX24 March BioBlitz so you can track your observations: Marching into Spring BioBlitz. \nAfter the hike\, there will be an optional trip a bit further north to do the drive-through at Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge.

SUMMARY:Presentation: Butte Biogeography: Tree Distribution in the Mountains of Central Oregon
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday March 26\, 7:00 pm\nPresentation: Butte Biogeography: Tree Distribution in the Mountains of Central Oregon\nSpeaker: Bob Earle\nLocation: East Bend Library\, 62080 Dean Swift Road \nThe presentation will look at disjunct populations of trees in the mountains (popularly called “buttes”) of Central Oregon. While considerable data has been collected about trees in the Cascade Range\, less is known about tree species on the smaller mountains of\nthe high desert of Central Oregon. Through many field trips\, the speaker attempted to fill in the missing data. He will discuss possible reasons for the locations of the trees and reveal interesting patterns in tree distribution that he discovered. \nBob Earle is a member of our High Desert Chapter who arrived in Bend during the pandemic and spent many days exploring the buttes in Central Oregon. He teaches Geographic Information Systems and Physical Geography (Landforms\, Weather\, Climate\, Biogeography) at Central Oregon Community College.

SUMMARY:Vesper Meadow Tour and Willow Planting Work Party
DESCRIPTION:Date: Saturday\, April 6th\, 10am – 2pm \nSiskiyou Chapter is partnering with Vesper Meadow for a meadow tour and willow-planting work party outside of Ashland. Vesper Meadow has been working for six years to restore a creek channel which was previously eroded due to overgrazing and down-cutting associated with a lack of vegetation. The group will learn restoration techniques like willow staking\, which create live gully-breaks resulting in diverse habitat features. This is a fun and easy way to participate as a land steward in headwater creeks of the Rogue River. All interested in learning more are welcome\, recommended for ages 12 and up. Please note the terrain is generally flat but can be uneven. Participants will be carrying willow stakes 4 – 7 ft in length and using loppers to source willow material. Please bring layers of clothing\, waders\, or waterproof boots\, water\, snacks\, and lunch. \nBe sure to RSVP to hold your spot and receive final details one week in advance of the event. For further information or to sign up\, please visit:\nhttps://www.vespermeadow.org/new-events/2024/4/27/willow-planting-work-party.

Dick spoke to the Siskiyou Chapter several years ago. \nSouthern Oregon University\, Science Building\, Room 161. This program will also be provided as a zoom for folks who cannot attend in person. To register for the zoom: https://bit.ly/npsotalks. \nDick’s degree is in economics to which he sacrificed twenty-five good years in the corporate world. Now retired\, He studies and photograph plants from southern Arizona to the Wallowa Mountains. When not in the field\, he studies 19th century botany and botanists in the old and new worlds.

SUMMARY:Presentation: The Master Melittologist Program's Oregon Bee Atlas: A Statewide Initiative to Document the Floral Relations of Oregon's Native Bee Fauna Using Community Scientists.
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, April 19\, 7:00 pm *Note this is Friday\, not a Monday meeting.\nPresentation: The Master Melittologist Program’s Oregon Bee Atlas: A Statewide\nInitiative to Document the Floral Relations of Oregon’s Native Bee Fauna Using Community Scientists.\nSpeaker: Lincoln Best\, Faculty Research Assistant\, Oregon State University\nLocation: In Person\, 221 Allen Hall\, University of Oregon campus. Venue may change\, so check https://eugenenaturalhistorysociety.org/ to stay informed. \nLincoln will introduce the productive framework for education through the online Master Melittologist Program and data production for the Oregon Bee Atlas. These complementary programs have assessed native bee visitors to more than 1\,500 plant taxa in the state and have detected several hundred species of bees including new state records and new species. Using a combination of traditional morphological examination and DNA-barcoding to identify species continues to expand our knowledge of the state bee fauna. \nLincoln Best is the taxonomist for the Oregon Bee Atlas and collaborates on research with many other groups in the Pacific Northwest and internationally. He is most interested in faunistics and the floral relations of these amazing animals.
