SUMMARY:Presentation:  Where David Douglas found the largest Pinus trees in the world
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, May 15\, 7:00 pm\nPresentation:  Where David Douglas found the largest Pinus trees in the world\nPresenter: Erich Reeder\nLocation: In-person presentation at the Siskiyou chapter meeting at Southern Oregon University Science Building\, Room 161. Join us in-person or via Zoom from home.  To register for Zoom\, go to https://bit.ly/npsotalks. \nBased on a detailed analysis of Douglas’ journal entries\, correspondence\, aerial imagery\, and topographic maps\, coupled with a deep familiarity with the region’s geography and native plant species\, Erich Reeder has confidently identified the site where Douglas discovered and measured a remarkable 215-foot tall\, 18.5-foot diameter sugar pine. Douglas himself noted that this tree\, impressive though it was\, was not the largest he encountered during his expeditions. \nErich\, a Rogue Valley native\, developed a deep appreciation for nature from an early age. After graduating from Medford Senior High School\, he studied civil engineering at Oregon State University. He then ventured into the field with a backpack and field guides to explore the flora and fauna of southwestern Oregon and northern California. In recent years\, Erich has worked as a wildlife surveyor for the Bureau of Land Management in the Umpqua Valley\, extensively traveling and hiking throughout the region once traversed by David Douglas nearly 200 years ago.

SUMMARY:Program: “Fritillaria gentneri: A Biography"
DESCRIPTION:Monday\, May 19\, 7:30 pm- 8:30 pm \nProgram: “Fritillaria gentneri: A Biography”\nPresenter: Alex Kurowski\, Oregon State University\nLocation: Cordley Hall Room 2602\, Oregon State University\, Corvallis or by Zoom \nDescription: In southern Oregon and northern California\, two species of Fritillaria overlap\, F. affinis and F. recurva. In the northern part of their overlapping ranges\, an endangered species known as Fritillaria gentneri was first discovered in 1942. Fritillaria gentneri shares morphological traits with both F. affinis and F. recurva\, leading to the hypothesis that F. gentneri is a hybrid of the two species. These species have giant genomes that would be expensive to sequence and assemble into a full genome\, meaning that traditional genomic analyses of F. gentneri origins are difficult to perform. After an introduction to the fascinating historical and conservation background of F. gentneri\, Alex will share her two years of research regarding the unknown origin of this mysterious rare species. \nRegister in advance for this meeting:\nhttps://oregonstate.zoom.us/meeting/register/WGsCk3iXQO61ekRg9sFwvQ \nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.

Among the many wildflowers\, expect to see saxifrages\, larkspur\, Lomatium ssp.\, prairie smoke\, Saddle Mountain bittercress\, chickweed\, checkermallow\, wallflower (aromatic!)\, countless chocolate lilies\, and monkeyflowers carpeting the hillsides below the mountain summit. Enjoy an amazing “big bloom” wildflower display and fill your senses. Cameras are encouraged. Bring lunch and be prepared for a moderately difficult hike in potential variable weather. Hiking poles are strongly recommended. An Oregon state park pass is required for each vehicle at Saddle Mountain. \nA carpool will leave early from Hillsboro at 7:30 am with the aim of arriving at the trailhead by 9:00 am. SUMMARY:Field Trip: The Hobbit Trail
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, May 24\, 12:00 pm – 3:00 pm\nField Trip: The Hobbit Trail\nLeader: Lecia Schall\nLocation: 91892 Oregon Coast Hwy\, Florence\, OR \nEnjoy mystical spruce and trees\, on the Hobbit Trail. We will wander through magical pathways through giant rhododendron and evergreen huckleberry\, down to sand dunes to aptly named Hobbit Beach. Options will be to continue northward along the beach or retrace your steps until the trail forks and heads up the cape to Heceta Head\, where leather polypodium sprawl under massive Sitka spruce. \nThe trail to Heceta Head Lighthouse offers coastal views\, incredible forest scenery that seems straight out of a storybook\, and then you can enjoy the history of this cute Oregon lighthouse. \nThe parking area is located on the side of Highway 101 (there is a small gravel pull-off that has a small hiking sign by it). We will meet there and cross the highway to get to the trail. We will go to Hobbit Beach first. Later we might head left to Heceta Head Lighthouse. Since both trails are extremely short\, combining them makes for a nice 3.2-mile hike. To reserve your spot contact sc*********@***il.com.
