DESCRIPTION:Date: December 19th\, 2026 at 9:30am  \nField Trip: Off-trail Botany Hike in the Split Rock Creek Drainage of Talent\nMeeting Location: Talent Elementary School parking lot\, 307 Wagner Creek Rd\, Talent\, OR 97540 at 9:30am\nLeader: Wayne Rolle\, retired Forest Service botanist  \nJoin Wayne Rolle for an opportunity to see and enjoy the flora of local riparian\, wetland\, forest and meadow plant communities of the Split Rock Creek watershed in the Siskiyou Crest vicinity\, south of Talent. The hike will be a full day cross-country in fairly steep terrain. The group will travel only a few miles but should expect 1\,100-1\,500 feet elevation gain and loss at a relatively leisurely pace. There will be frequent stops to talk about vascular plants\, mosses\, lichens\, and maybe fungi. Jake will talk about what the Sitka Center does and who it serves before leading into a longer conversation about Sitka’s habitat restoration efforts on its 80-acre nature preserve. The preserve is nestled on Cascade Head\, overlooks the Salmon River Estuary\, and is surrounded by the Siuslaw National Forest. Restoration work at Sitka focuses on increasing native wildflower habitat for the threatened Oregon Silverspot Butterfly and all our local pollinators. DESCRIPTION:Monday\, October 12\, 7:30 pm – 8:30 pm\nProgram: The Price of Pollen: Costs of Male Fertility Restoration and Female Frequency in Meadow Checkermallow\nPresenter: Brooklyn Richards \nLocation: Cordley Hall Room 2602\, Oregon State University \nWhy do some plant populations contain both female and hermaphroditic individuals? This sexual system\, called gynodioecy\, occurs in meadow checkermallow (Sidalcea campestris)\, a perennial wildflower endemic to Oregon’s Willamette Valley. In gynodioecious species\, females produce only seeds while hermaphrodites produce both seeds and pollen. For females to persist\, they need to make up for not producing pollen by having some reproductive advantage over hermaphrodites. At the same time\, producing pollen may come with costs for hermaphrodites. Come share your love of native plants\, help restore the river corridor\, and create a space for education and enjoyment for years to come! Work will include planting native species\, moving materials with wheelbarrows\, shoveling\, and preparing planting areas. Volunteers should expect activities that may involve lifting\, bending\, kneeling\, and walking on uneven ground while working outdoors in variable weather conditions. The Seed Extractory started in 1978 as part of the Bend Pine Nursery to extract seed from thirty-three different species of conifers used for growing seedlings for reforestation of National Forests in Oregon and Washington. The Extractory currently manages a seed bank for five of the National Forests in the Pacific Northwest region\, many of the Bureau of Land Management western state districts\, and the Bureau of Indian Affairs. In 1995\, the Extractory began processing seed from a diversity of native species collected by the National Forests in the Pacific Northwest. The Seed Extractory\, to date\, has processed seed from over 4\,000 different native plant species collected by the U.S. Forest Service and the Bureau of Land Management throughout the western United States. \nRSVP HERE

The presentation is based on research conducted over decades and published in King’s 2023 book\, The Ghost Forest: Racists\, Radicals\, and Real Estate in the California Redwoods. It is also the story of King’s own activism\, as he co-founded the movement during the 1980s to prevent the junk-bond liquidation of the very last ancient redwood groves still standing outside of parks. The book has been widely praised\, including by authors Charles Frazier and Richard Preston. The Atlantic magazine called The Ghost Forest\, “Groundbreaking … an epic tale of corruption and deception\, perpetrated on a mass scale for nearly a century.” For more see: https://gregkingwriter.com/the-ghost-forest \nGreg King is an award-winning journalist and activist credited with spearheading the movement to protect Headwaters Forest in Humboldt County\, California. King initiated the “redwood wars”  following the notorious 1985 takeover of the venerable Pacific Lumber Company by the Houston energy and real estate conglomerate Maxxam\, and he identified and named Headwaters Forest in 1987. Greg King is a fifth-generation native of California’s redwood country. His nineteenth-century ancestors arrived in Sonoma County in 1873 and later owned one of the largest redwood mills on the Russian River. \nKing’s articles and photographs have appeared in The Sun\, Sierra\, Smithsonian\, Rolling Stone\, Newsweek\, the Portland Oregonian\, the Sacramento Bee\, Mother Jones and other publications.  In 2016 the Environmental Protection  Information Center presented King with its annual Sempervirens Lifetime  Achievement Award. In 2023 PublicAffairs Books published King’s book\, The Ghost Forest\, the definitive history of redwood logging and protection efforts. King lives in Humboldt County\, where he serves as President and Executive Director of Siskiyou Land Conservancy.

Feel free to bring in a sample of a mystery plant (at least 10 sample cuttings \, so we can all work collaboratively to identify your plant; please no garden ornamentals)\, or work on a plant provided by the organizer.   If you have a plant to bring\, please do not overharvest wild plants. Make notes on when and where you collected. If you have a shrubby plant or tree\, take photos and additional notes. DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, August 16\, 9:00 am – 3:00 pm\nField Trip: Beaver Creek State Natural Area and Ona Beach in Newport\nLeaders: Ann Geyer and Alexandria Kurowski \nJoin the NPSO Midcoast Initiative and the Corvallis chapter to escape the late-summer heat with a field trip to a unique and diverse set of plant habitats! We’ll start the morning observing various wetland plant species on a brief hike through the Beaver Creek area south of Newport\, Oregon. After lunch\, we’ll travel over to Ona Beach across Highway 101 to see coastal plants and the ocean! \nPlease note that the hike has changed locations and length from previous years. At Beaver Creek\, we’ll meet at the visitor’s center\, then carpool to the South Beaver Creek Road entrance\, where we’ll take the 2-mile Beaver Creek Loop. Afterwards\, we’ll drive over to Ona Beach parking area and walk to the beach from there\, about another 0.3 miles. There is very minimal elevation gain. \nPlease bring lunch and water\, dress appropriately for variable weather conditions and potential muddy/wet terrain (could be warm at the marsh and windy and cold at the beach)\, and I’d suggest bringing binoculars if you have an interest in birdwatching. \nWe will meet at the Oregon State University\, Wilkinson Hall parking lot (44.569\, -123.281) southwest of Java Crew coffee shop\, at 26th and Monroe in Corvallis at 9:00 am. An alternative meetup location is at the Beaver Creek Visitor’s Center at 11:00 am. We are limiting this field trip to 20 attendees.
