DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, August 16\, 9:00 am – 3:00 pm\nField Trip: Beaver Creek State Natural Area and Ona Beach in Newport\nLeaders: Ann Geyer and Alexandria Kurowski \nJoin the NPSO Midcoast Initiative and the Corvallis chapter to escape the late-summer heat with a field trip to a unique and diverse set of plant habitats! We’ll start the morning observing various wetland plant species on a brief hike through the Beaver Creek area south of Newport\, Oregon. After lunch\, we’ll travel over to Ona Beach across Highway 101 to see coastal plants and the ocean! \nPlease note that the hike has changed locations and length from previous years. At Beaver Creek\, we’ll meet at the visitor’s center\, then carpool to the South Beaver Creek Road entrance\, where we’ll take the 2-mile Beaver Creek Loop. Afterwards\, we’ll drive over to Ona Beach parking area and walk to the beach from there\, about another 0.3 miles. There is very minimal elevation gain. \nPlease bring lunch and water\, dress appropriately for variable weather conditions and potential muddy/wet terrain (could be warm at the marsh and windy and cold at the beach)\, and I’d suggest bringing binoculars if you have an interest in birdwatching. \nWe will meet at the Oregon State University\, Wilkinson Hall parking lot (44.569\, -123.281) southwest of Java Crew coffee shop\, at 26th and Monroe in Corvallis at 9:00 am. An alternative meetup location is at the Beaver Creek Visitor’s Center at 11:00 am. We are limiting this field trip to 20 attendees. SUMMARY:Field Trip: Deadfall Lakes - Mt. Eddy near Weed\, California
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, August 1\, 8:00 am – 5:30 pm\nField Trip: Deadfall Lakes – Mt. Eddy near Weed\, California\nLeader: Matt Dybala\nMeeting Location: CVS Pharmacy\, 2341 Ashland St\, Ashland\, OR \nMount Eddy is the tallest peak in the Klamath Mountains at 9\,025 ft. It is unusual because it has high elevation serpentine soils and sits adjacent to the Cascade Mountains.  Our trip will be on the Pacific Crest Trail from Parks Creek Trailhead to the Lower Deadfall Lakes. The roundtrip total hike will be six miles with 1080 ft elevation gain. I will be sharing a plant list made by two amazing botanists\, Norm Jensen and Alex Maksymowicz. Mount Eddy is one of the only places in the world where you can see Klamath Foxtail Pines (Pinus balfouriana subsp. balfouriana).  And there are several additional endemic species with narrow geographic ranges\, such as Calochortus nudus or naked mariposa lily\, Lilium pardalinum ssp.shastense or Shasta Lily\, and Astragalus whitneyi var. siskiyouensis or balloonpod milkvetch growing in this botanical area\, to name a few! \nThe drive to the trailhead is 74.2 miles for a total of one hour and 32 minutes. (For comparison the drive to Crater Lake is two hours to the entry gate.) The route is paved the whole way. The directions to the trailhead are as follows. From Ashland\, drive south on I-5 for 60.2 miles and take exit 751and turn right onto Old Hwy 99. After 0.2 miles turn left on Steward Springs Road which will become Forest Rte. 42N17 for 13. 6 miles. \nFor those interested\, there will also be plans to camp overnight to extend our time at this amazing location for an additional day of botanizing. \nPlease register in advance by contacting si************@***il.com

This training is perfect for people interested in finding rare plants\, contributing to their conservation\, and collecting detailed population information. This training is supported by the NPSO High Desert Chapter\, with a suggested donation of $20 for members and $30 for non-members to help cover travel costs for our instructor. This member of the fern family is on the rare list for the State of Oregon and is being monitored by the Deschutes National Forest. We will hike under a mile on a good trail with under 1000 feet elevation gain. We will meet to carpool at 9:00 at a pre-determined spot. Roads are fine for a Subaru or equivalent. We will return to Bend by 4:00 pm. Hiker numbers will be limited to avoid trampling. Bring a lunch and liquids. There is not much shade. Hiking boots are recommended. No pets. DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, July 11\, 8:00 am – 4:30 pm\nField Trip: Bear Camp Botanical Area near Galice\, OR\nLeader: Matt Dybala\nMeeting Location: Ray’s Food Place\, 3500 Merlin Rd\, Grants Pass\, OR 97526 \nThis Botanical Area is located halfway between Galice and Agness along the Bear Camp Road/Bear Camp Ridge area\, close to 5\,000’ elevation. We will be exploring the area while looking for the many unusual plants found here. The hike travels along three rarely used gravel roads with occasional side excursions. The hike will be about 5.5 miles with 650 feet elevation gain. Botanist Veva Stansell conducted extensive plant surveys in this area over many years; her fieldwork provided the basis for approval of this site as a Botanical Area as part of the 1989 Forest Plan for the Siskiyou National Forest.  Veva compiled an extensive plant list for the area and left a legacy of sharing botanical joy with everyone\, and we’ll continue her joyful legacy on this hike. \nPlease register in advance by contacting si************@***il.com

The former Multnomah County poor farm is now the 45-acre hotel\, restaurant\, spa\, golf course\, and concert venue that most are familiar with. The grounds also include holistically managed uncommon plantings\, regenerative fruit and vegetable productions\, native demonstration gardens\, and restoration projects ranging from 2-36 years old. You will get an in-depth overview of the land use history and future visions\, learn about various types of small to large scale habitat gardening strategies\, and get a closer look at active restoration spaces currently closed to the public\, including an amphibian breeding pond and a mini meadow with lots of blooming native annuals and bunchgrasses. We’ll kick off the event with light refreshments and head off into the long light of the evening to collect early summer seeds in the meadow. Volunteers will enjoy the beauty of the Preserve in the evening and have opportunities to learn about native plants of the Cascade-Siskiyou\, their pollinators\, and human-connections. We’ll talk about seed identification and techniques for upland meadow restoration. Native grass and flower seeds will be stored for fall restoration planting in restored meadow plots and demonstration garden areas. On the bird front\, we’ll look and listen for varied thrushes and hermit thrushes. DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, June 20\, 8:00 am – late afternoon \nField Trip: Iron Mountain and Cone Peak \nLeaders: Joyce Eberhart and Alex Kurowski \nWe will hike the Iron Mountain-Cone Peak loop\, identifying wildflowers in this botanical hotspot. Over 200 species of vascular plants have been recorded across this botanically rich trail west of Santiam Pass. Wildflowers of the Western Cascades (Ross and Chambers\, 1988) focuses on the flora of this area. Such losses are not an option if we wish to continue our current standard of living on planet Earth. The good news is that none of this is inevitable. Doug Tallamy will discuss simple steps that each of us can\, and must\, take to reverse declining biodiversity on our own properties\, and he will explain why we\, ourselves\, are nature’s best hope. \nThe class fee is $15 per person or sliding scale.
