SUMMARY:Zoom Program: When is an Endangered Species Really Recovered? Four Stories of Hope and Uncertainty from the Willamette Valley.
DESCRIPTION:Monday\, February 26\, 6:30 to 7:30 pm \nDr. Tom Kaye\, Executive Director of the Institute for Applied Ecology\, will discuss the remarkable recovery of four endangered species and the perils they still face. His nonprofit organization has worked to restore populations of Bradshaw’s lomatium\, Fender’s blue butterfly\, golden paintbrush\, and Nelson’s checkermallow in partnership with several other organizations and agencies for over two decades\, with substantial conservation impact. Tom will explain their successful approach and why these species need continued care and attention. Registration is required. For more information and to register for this Zoom presentation\, email John Savage at wv****@***il.com.

SUMMARY:Presentation: Updates on holoparasitic Orobanchaceae in Oregon
DESCRIPTION:Monday\, February 19\, 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm \nSpeakers: Dr. Alison Colwell\, Curator\, Center for Plant Diversity\, University of\nCalifornia\, Davis and Dr. Adam Schneider\, University of Wisconsin\, LaCrosse\nLocation: via Zoom: Click here to enter \nAlison Colwell and Adam Schneider have been studying the non-photosynthetic members of the parasitic plant family Orobanchaceae (primarily Aphyllon\, Conopholis and Phelipanche) in North America for many years. Hard to find\, largely subterranean and often rare\, these plants take extreme patience to study. Among the changes Alison and Adam have made that affect the Oregon flora are a reversion of North American native Orobanche to the genus Aphyllon (Adam) and description of new species and revision of existing species (Alison and Adam). This team will provide updates on these projects that affect the Oregon flora.

SUMMARY:Rescheduled Presentation: Ancient Grasslands: The Past\, Present and Future of Willamette Valley Prairie and Savanna
DESCRIPTION:Monday\, January 15\, 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm \nPresenter: Bart Johnson\, Professor Emeritus from the University of Oregon\nLocation: In person\, Amazon Community Center\, Main Hall\, 2700 Hilyard St\, Eugene\, 97405 \nOak-pine savanna and prairie have persisted in the Willamette Valley and other parts of the lowland Pacific Northwest for thousands of years. These ecosystems appear wellsuited to projected future climate because of their resilience to heat\, drought\, and fire. With rapidly increasing risk to forests and people from wildfire\, sustaining and restoring vegetation mosaics that include oak-pine savanna could be a key to both regional biodiversity conservation and reducing the risk of catastrophic fires.
