Containing a surprising variety of habitats\, the Drake Peak area is home to numerous wildflower and tree species. \nBobbie is a life-long naturalist who has had professional stints as a park naturalist\, wilderness leader\, and environmental educator. She recently was part of an environmental education/field study team that taught stream ecology\, mountain snow studies\, old growth forest science\, and beach ecology to students in grades K-5. She has authored several books and wrote a nature column for Salem’s Statesman Journal newspaper for three and a half years. Registration is required. DESCRIPTION:Saturday and Sunday\, December 14 and 15\, 10:00 am – 4:00 pm\nField Trip: Silver Falls State Park Winter Festival \nMembers of the Willamette Valley Chapter of the NPSO will lead walks to view the conifers and hardwoods of Silver Falls State Park at 11:00 am on both days of the Silver Falls State Park Winter Festival. Other activities include guided mushroom and bird walks; a class on winter plant propagation; and interactive “discovery tables” about the winter solstice\, animal tracks\, mosses and lichens\, bigleaf maple syrup\, and how the waterfalls change with the seasons. Visitors can also build bird nest boxes and make wreaths\, bird feeders\, and paper birds. The guided walks will meet in South Falls Lodge courtyard. He is an Oregon Master Naturalist and Apprentice Master Melittologist. DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, November 14\, 6:30 pm – 7:30 pm\nZoom Program: Restoring threatened and endangered Oregon native plants \nSara Alaica\, restoration ecologist at the Institute for Applied Ecology\, will give a Zoom presentation about her work at the Institute restoring rare plants in the Willamette Valley. She will share the steps in the restoration process\, the challenge working with special status plants such as Kincaid’s lupine and Willamette daisy\, and the progress made so far.  Sara has eight years of experience writing and implementing restoration plans across a variety of habitat types and has worked with several threatened and endangered plant species including Kincaid’s lupine\, thin-leaved peavine\, and the New England bulrush. Sara received her MSc in Ecological Restoration from Simon Frasier University and is a Certified Ecological Restoration Practitioner. Registration is required. DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, October 27\, 9:00 am – 5:00 pm\nField Trip: Metolius River Trail \nMatt Palmquist and Elliot Drake-Maurer will lead a relaxed\, 3-mile stroll along the Metolius River trail. This “larch march” will feature the golden needles of the Western Larch\, Oregon’s only native deciduous conifer\, as well as a variety of other conifers. The trail is mostly flat and there will be ample time to admire the colors and the beauty of the river. Matt Palmquist is a park ranger at Silver Falls State Park\, who loves viewing and teaching about Oregon’s native plants. Elliot Drake-Maurer is an outdoor education specialist with the OSU Extension Service Outdoor School office. The mission of this newly formed land trust “is to conserve and restore the lands and waters of the mid to northern Willamette River Basin” through purchasing and receiving donated land for permanent protection. The Trust will acquire lands along Willamette River sub-basins such as the Clackamas\, Molalla\, Pudding\, and Yamhill Watersheds\, and points southward which to date have not had a local land trust. Travis was the Riverkeeper and Executive Director of Willamette Riverkeeper for 24 years. He is the author of the Willamette River Field Guide\, Willamette River Greenways\, and Willamette Water Trail Guides. DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, April 25\, 6:30 pm – 7:30 pm\nZoom Program: Tribal Histories of the Willamette Valley and Reconstructing Willamette Valley Environments\nPresenter: Dr. David G. Lewis \nDr. Lewis\, Assistant Professor of Anthropology and Indigenous Studies at Oregon State University and author of the acclaimed Tribal Histories of the Willamette Valley\, will discuss the Kalapuya tribal culture and the Willamette Valley environments in which they lived\, and present his research tracing the changes to the environment after arrival of European settlers. Dr. Lewis will explore the removal of water and the return of cultural fire and what this means for tribal descendants today. \nDr. Lewis has conducted extensive research on the tribal histories of Northwest coastal peoples\, specializing in Western Oregon tribes. He served as the director of the Southwest Oregon Project at the University of Oregon and was the Cultural Department manager of the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde for eight years. Dr. Lewis is a member of the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde and a descendant of the Takelma\, Chinook\, Molalla\, and Santiam Kalapuya peoples of Western Oregon.
