SUMMARY:Field Trip: Whaleshead - Indian Sands Hike
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, July 27\, 10:00 AM\nField Trip: Whaleshead – Indian Sands Hike \nLeader: Olivia Dethlefsen\nLocation: Whaleshead Beach (Upper parking lot) \nWe will gather at the upper parking lot for Whaleshead Beach (At the top of the hill\, not the parking near the beach). The hike will begin at 10:15 and is expected to take at least two to three hours depending on how far participants want to go. This will be a strenuous hike of about three to four miles\, with considerable elevation change. \nThe plan is to take the coast trail north to the vicinity of a pullout between Whalehead Beach and the large Indian Sands parking lot. In this area\, we will find orange bush monkeyflower near the northern edge of their range\, expected to be blooming in late July. \nAt this point we have the option of doing a longer hike all the way to the bluffs at Indian Sands\, which would be around six miles total\, increasing the hiking time to five or six hours\, or we can turn back here depending on group interest. There is also the option to take a short but steep walk and see the sea bluffs on the tip of Whaleshead itself. \nPlease be aware that there may be poison oak in places along the trail. Usually this trail is well maintained\, so it is not an issue except when leaving the path. \nTo sign up\, or with any questions\, please email Olivia at ol**************@***il.com.

SUMMARY:Event: Garden Tour
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, June 8\, 10:00 am – 2:00 pm\nEvent: Garden Tour \nLeader: Maggie Daly\nLocation: Various locations in Gold Beach \nThis native plant garden tour will be held at four locations in Gold Beach. To sign up\, or if you have questions\, please email Maggie Daly at ma***************@***il.com. The tour brochure with addresses and a map will be sent to people who sign up a few days before the tour. Suggested donation will be $10. \nIn the meantime\, here are brief descriptions of the gardens to whet your appetite: \nA Mountaintop Pollinator Garden\nThe landowner moved 100 cubic yards of rock and soil to create a flat space for a pollinator garden\, greenhouse\, and raised vegetable beds. Planted a little over a year ago\, this garden was designed by Darcy Grahek and features pollinator plants that together bloom over a long period of time in many colors. \nSee How a Bioswale Works!\nWhen water runs off a parking lot it is moving fast and is carrying all sorts of pollution. A bioswale slows the water down and filters it\, creating clean\, clear water fit for our creeks\, rivers\, oceans\, and for all the creatures that live and play there. \nA Blank Canvas\nWhen purchased four years ago\, this small yard was almost all lawn. This gave the landowner an opportunity to enact a long-time dream: to demonstrate that you can create a beautiful\, pleasing\, functional garden with native plants. So out with the lawn and holly and tibouchina and in with the cardboard and mulch! And lots and lots of native trees\, shrubs\, perennials\, and grasses. \nA Delicate Stream Restoration\, A Bold Elegant Front Yard\nThis landowner has spent hours and hours restoring a treasure: a stream bank filled with native plants. The removal of blackberry allowed a surprisingly diverse variety of native plants to thrive and reestablish. In addition\, a bold design in the front yard creates a beautiful setting for the house.

SUMMARY:Field Trip: Blacklock Point (Floras Lake Natural Area)
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, June 1\, 10:00 am\nField Trip: Blacklock Point (Floras Lake Natural Area)\nLeader:  Lynn Jackson and Olivia Dethlefsen\nLocation:  Cape Blanco State Airport – 92200 Airport Road\, Sixes \nWe will meet at the parking area at the end of Airport Road at the Cape Blanco State Airport. Airport Road is between mileposts 293 and 294 on US 101 between Bandon and Port Orford. Follow the road approximately 3 miles to the parking area. We will meet at 10:00 and expect to start hiking at 10:15. Please note there are no restroom facilities at the parking area. \nThis will be a 4-to-6-mile hike depending on where the flowers are the best\, weather conditions\, and group interests. The trail is mostly level and will either be an out and back or longer loop. We will walk through a variety of habitats. The views can be spectacular and the spring wildflowers diverse. At this time of year we can expect to see bunchberry\, rhododendrons\, lupines\, and paintbrush in flower. We will also learn a bit about the interesting history and geology of the area. \nBring water\, and a snack if you wish. While the trails are mostly level\, there are areas with exposed roots\, so hiking poles may be useful for some. The trails should be mostly dried out. Dress for the weather and be prepared for windy conditions on the exposed bluffs. \nTo sign up or if you have any questions\, please contact Lynn Jackson at Ly*****@*ol.com.  As with all NPSO hikes\, liability waivers will be provided before the hike.

SUMMARY:Field Trip: Butler Bar
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, May 25\, 10:30 am \nLeader: Olivia Dethlefsen at ol**************@***il.com (Note email Jb***@****et.com as Olivia will be out of town until mid-May)\nLocation: Near Butler Bar Campground\, 22 miles from Port Orford \nThis plant walk will consist of three legs. First\, we will visit a Pacific dogwood located in the campground itself. Next is a short walk on NF-5325\, in the direction of Laird Lake\, to look at some special plants of interest there. After we walk back past our parking area\, there will be an optional third leg\, involving a little bit more hiking. We will explore about one to one to one-half mile up NF-5201\, following Butler Creek\, and then return the same way. This road is closed to vehicles at this time but is fine for walking. There is a patchwork of burn scars and slides\, interspersed with less disturbed parts which remain green. We may see a couple new plants on this leg\, but the main interest here is the chance to compare the disturbance and regrowth to NF-5325. \nThe first two legs will be about one-half mile of walking total\, with little elevation change. The last leg will be two to three miles total\, walking uphill and then downhill on the return. Binoculars are encouraged: one side of the road is a steep\, rocky slope\, so binoculars will give you a little bit more to look at higher on the cliffs. This forest includes tanoak. To prevent spreading sudden oak death\, if you are coming from Brookings\, Gold Beach\, or Port Orford\, it is encouraged to make sure you aren’t tracking in mud or leaf litter from another tanoak forest. \nIf you are interested in attending this plant walk\, please sign up by emailing Julia Bott at Jb***@****et.com as Olivia will be out of town until mid-May. Olivia (ol**************@***il.com) will provide additional details and directions once she returns.

DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, May 11\, 10:00 am – 12:00 pm \nLeader: Charmane Mitchell \nLocation: Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints\, 2000 Jackson Street\, Port Orford \nMs. McKnight will speak about the Coastal Species Conservation Collaborative\, a workgroup of state and federal agencies\, non-governmental organizations (including NPSO’s Rare and Endangered Committee)\, and researchers to focus on conservation of rare coastal species in northern CA and southern OR. The group has identified thirty-eight species of conservation need. Of the thirty-eight species\, twenty-seven are plants. Many of these plants have not been surveyed in decades\, and we therefore have very little information on the status of these species\, the status of populations\, what conservation issues they face\, and other challenges. She will be leading efforts to survey for many of these species this field season and would love to find some folks (no botany experience needed) to help conduct surveys and learn about coastal species conservation. \nA Zoom option is available at:\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/85621706837?pwd=MG94bUtEOE1kcDJ1bkh6U1l2S2NoZz09\nMeeting ID: 856 2170 6837\nPasscode: 353471
