SUMMARY:Chapter Program Presentation: Nature’s Best Hope
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, June 18\, 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm\nChapter Program Presentation: Nature’s Best Hope\nPresenter: Doug Tallamy\nLocation: Zoom only.  SCNPSO is sponsoring this talk with the Oregon State University Land Steward Program. \nRecent headlines about global insect declines\, the impending extinction of one million species worldwide\, and three billion fewer birds in North America are a bleak reality check about how ineffective our current landscape designs have been at sustaining the plants and animals that sustain us. Such losses are not an option if we wish to continue our current standard of living on planet Earth. The good news is that none of this is inevitable. Doug Tallamy will discuss simple steps that each of us can\, and must\, take to reverse declining biodiversity on our own properties\, and he will explain why we\, ourselves\, are nature’s best hope. \nThe class fee is $15 per person or sliding scale. The cost helps support the Land Steward Program. Registrants will receive a link to the Zoom recording after the class. For more details and registration see: https://beav.es/UcY. \nDoug Tallamy is the T. A. Baker Professor of Agriculture in the Department of Entomology and Wildlife Ecology at the University of Delaware\, where he has authored 118 research publications and has taught insect-related courses for forty-five years. Chief among his research goals is to better understand the many ways insects interact with plants and how such interactions determine the diversity of animal communities. \nDoug’s books include Bringing Nature Home\, The Living Landscape (co-authored with Rick Darke)\, Nature’s Best Hope (a New York Times best seller)\, The Nature of Oaks (winner of the American Horticultural Society’s 2022 book award)\, and his latest book\, How Can I Help.\nIn 2021\, Doug cofounded Homegrown National Park with Michelle Alfandari (HomegrownNationalPark.org). His awards include recognition from The Garden Writer’s Association\, Audubon\, The National Wildlife Federation\, Allegheny College\, Ecoforesters\, The Garden Club of America\, The Herb Society\, and The American Horticultural Association.

SUMMARY:Field Trip: Seed Collection in Solstice Light at Vesper Meadow
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday June 23rd\, 4:00 pm – 7:00 pm\nField Trip: Seed Collection in Solstice Light at Vesper Meadow\nLeader: Jeanine Moyer\, Director at Vesper Meadow \nJoin Vesper Meadow Director Jeanine Moy and friends from the Siskiyou Chapter of the Native Plant Society of Oregon during the golden hours at the scenic Vesper Meadow Restoration Preserve for a seed collection walk. We’ll kick off the event with light refreshments and head off into the long light of the evening to collect early summer seeds in the meadow. Volunteers will enjoy the beauty of the Preserve in the evening and have opportunities to learn about native plants of the Cascade-Siskiyou\, their pollinators\, and human-connections. We’ll talk about seed identification and techniques for upland meadow restoration. Native grass and flower seeds will be stored for fall restoration planting in restored meadow plots and demonstration garden areas. For more information and to sign up for this hike\, please visit: Vesper Meadow Seed Collection Event Registration
