SUMMARY:Field Trip: Sterling Mine Ditch Trail from Deming Gulch
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, May 16\, 9:00 am – 3:00 pm\nField Trip: Sterling Mine Ditch Trail from Deming Gulch\nLeader: Al Collinet\nMeeting Location: Walmart Supercenter at 1360 Center Drive in Medford in the SE corner\nof the parking lot next to Center Drive. Alternatively\, you can meet the group at the\nDeming Gulch Trailhead at about 9:35 am\, accessed on Bureau of Land Management Road\n39-2-17 from Sterling Creek Road.\nThe plan is to walk the Sterling Mine ditch for about three miles north and return. There\nis very little elevation gain for this hike as the trail follows the ditch. We plan on doing\nsome scouting of this hike to see if we can get access to the Deming Gulch fire scar.\nThere are a number of small roads in the area we might use. We may even move the hike\nto sections of the Jack-Ash trail if our research finds a better botanizing experience. The\nhike will take place at this time and at this general area no matter what exact location is\ndecided.\nFor a complete Plant List use this link:\nhttps://oregonflora.org/checklists/checklist.php?cl=9871&pid=2\nPlease register in advance by contacting si************@***il.com\nSouth Coast

SUMMARY:Resilience Is Our Nature: Honoring Endangered Plants on Canvas
DESCRIPTION:May Program: Thursday\, May 14\, 2026\, 7-9 pm \nResilience Is Our Nature: Honoring Endangered Plants on Canvas \nSusan Harrington\, artist \nSusan Harrington\, a full-time artist in the Portland area\, will share her current work and process spanning the simple joy of being present in nature\, to the creation of what she refers to as “plant portraits”. Susan’s oil paintings are a commentary about the endangered and native species of plants in the western United States threatened by urban expansion\, agriculture development\, wildfire and climate change. \nAlso joining in the Program\, will be members of PSU and NPSO’s Citizens for Rare Plants Watch\, with an update on the successes of ORBIC and CRPW in 2025\, aspirations and plans for a name change in 2026. \nAdditional Waterstone Artist Talk with Susan:  May 17th \nThroughout May\, Susan will be presenting a solo exhibition of her paintings at Waterstone Gallery in Portland’s Pearl District titled Resilience Is Our Nature. The exhibition centers on endangered native plants and draws parallels between botanical resilience and our shared human experience in an era of environmental and social change.  On Sunday\, May 17\, 2026\, Susan will give her in person Artist Talk. We hope other NPSO members will join her and view all of her stunning and remarkable paintings in person. \nZoom Registration Link:  https://us06web.zoom.us/meeting/register/5bkJL4fzT7mJIS1t7lFf8Q

SUMMARY:Presentation: Analyzing the Impacts of Free-Range Cattle on Mountain Meadows in the Scott River Watershed
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, May 14\, 7:00 pm\nPresentation: Analyzing the Impacts of Free-Range Cattle on Mountain Meadows in\nthe Scott River Watershed\nPresenter: Courtney Akers\nLocation: In-person presentation at the Siskiyou chapter meeting at Southern Oregon\nUniversity Science Building\, Room 161. Join us in-person or Zoom in from home. To\nregister for Zoom\, go to https://bit.ly/npsotalks.\nCourtney Akers\, the 2025 recipient of Siskiyou Chapter NPSO’s Frank A. Lang student\ngrant\, is an environmental science and policy major completing her senior year at\nSouthern Oregon University. She used this grant to fund her capstone research project\, a\ncomprehensive field study focused on assessing the impacts of free-range cattle on\nbiodiverse mountain meadows\, streams\, and wetlands. The 2025/2026 study focuses on\ntwo sub watersheds nestled in California’s Scott Valley: Cabin Meadows and Rock Fence.\nThese watersheds contain a variety of meadows with differing hydrogeomorphic types\,\nincluding fens\, that support a plethora of heterogeneous plant communities. The\nsubalpine meadows in this region provide sanctuary for rare and sensitive species found\nin the Klamath-Siskiyou ecoregion\, such as Darlingtonia californica.\nThe Scott River Watershed Council (SRWC)\, a local conservation organization\, has\nobserved degradation in these habitats\, largely due to hydrological disruptions\, sediment\ntransport\, and ecosystem deterioration. With support from the SRWC\, Courtney has\ninvestigated how free-range cattle contribute to this habitat deterioration\, and will\nshare her research methodology\, results\, and conclusions. This study provides key\ninsights into cattle behavior in these sub watersheds. The SRWC intends to use these\nfindings to identify concentrated impact areas and develop targeted\, cost-effective\nrestoration strategies.

SUMMARY:Presentation: Eight Dollar Mountain: the Place\, the Plants\, and a Growing Threat
DESCRIPTION:Monday\, May 4\, 6:00pm\nPresentation: Eight Dollar Mountain: the Place\, the Plants\, and a Growing Threat\nSpeaker: Kristi Mergenthaler\nLocation: In-person presentation at the Siskiyou Field Institute in Selma\, Oregon at 1241 Illinois River Rd. Selma\, OR 97538 \nEight Dollar Mountain is an iconic  conical mountain in the Illinois Valley and one of the most significant botanical hotspots in Southwest Oregon. Its ultramafic soils\, derived from mantle rocks\, support an extraordinary concentration of rare\, endemic\, and state- and federally listed plant species—many of which occur nowhere else on Earth\, and some known only from the Illinois Valley. This otherworldly landscape long served as a living laboratory for researchers studying endemism\, adaptation\, and ecological resilience.Today\, Eight Dollar Mountain faces increasing pressure from renewed nickel mining interests\, a growing threat not only to this singular landscape but to serpentine ecosystems throughout Southwest Oregon. Mining activity poses risks to fragile plant communities\, hydrology\, and long-term ecological integrity. This presentation will explore the botanical significance of Eight Dollar Mountain\, serpentine ecology\, and the urgent conservation challenges posed by mineral extraction in one of Oregon’s most biologically irreplaceable regions. Southern Oregon Land Conservancy and Siskiyou Chapter Native Plant Society of Oregon are sponsoring this program. \nKristi Mergenthaler is the stewardship director with Southern Oregon Land Conservancy and previously worked as a rare plant botanist. Her conservation passions include rare and endemic plants; serpentine landscapes such as Eight Dollar Mt.; and standing up for underappreciated species and habitats such as oak mistletoe\, poison-oak\, chaparral\, and western rattlesnake.

SUMMARY:Event: Restoration Field Work Opportunity (Highland)
DESCRIPTION:Saturday-Sunday\, May 2-3\, 7:00 am – 5:00 pm\nEvent: Restoration Field Work Opportunity (Highland)\nLeader: David Cevallo\nLocation: 1500 SW Chandler Ave\, Bend\, OR 97702\nThis project is testing seed sourcing approaches for dryland restoration using native\ngrasses. We are working in both lowland and highland environments because they\nrepresent different climate conditions. In general\, lowlands are warmer and drier\, while\nhighlands are cooler and wetter. Under climate change\, many highland areas are\nexpected to become warmer and drier\, so we are interested in understanding whether\necotypes from drier environments may also be useful for restoration in places expected\nto become drier in the future. Volunteers may help with site layout\, direct seeding\,\ntransplanting seedlings\, labeling treatments\, watering plants\, and general field\nlogistics. Overnight camping is required.
