DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, June 29\, 9:00 am – 3:00 pm\nField Trip: Weiss Rd\, Prairie/Oak Area ACEC and Camas Swale RNA \nLeader: Ed Alverson \nJoin Ed Alverson to visit two adjacent Bureau of Land Management sites located about six miles southwest of Creswell to view the late spring/early summer flora. The Weiss Road Prairie-Oak-Pine Area of Critical Environmental Concern (ACEC) has a prairie/bald community with oaks and associated understory species. The nearby 314-acre Camas Swale Research Natural Area (RNA) has an old growth Douglas-fir forest plus a small (6 acre) prairie/bald community. More information on Camas Swale RNA can be found in the Guidebook Supplement at: https://www.fs.usda.gov/pnw/pubs/pnw_gtr843.pdf. \nThe outing will be a mix of walking on gravel roads through forest and some cross-country travel through forest for fifty to 100 yards to reach open meadows or balds. Participants should wear sturdy shoes\, and bring lunch\, water\, and sunscreen. This is a U.S. Forest Service facility where native plant materials are collected and grown out in containers for restoration projects. We’re hoping that many of the seeds that Michelle and her colleagues planted last fall will be flowering this month. Michelle will also show us the fern species she is propagating. DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, June 8\, 10:00 am – 11:30 am \nField Trip: Turtle Flats\nLeaders: Jared Tarr\, Intern and Volunteer Coordinator\, Friends of Buford Park and Mt Pisgah\, and Dave Predeek \nJoin Jared and Dave for a 1.5 hour walk of Turtle Flats with an optional work party extension. Participants will see the transformation from gravel pits to restored wetland habitat with plenty of native plant species. The work party runs until noon\, so attendees can get in a half hour burst of service work if they so desire. \nWe will be traversing some uneven ground\, but primarily be on gravel roads/paths for a ~.75 mile out-and-back. Participants should dress for the weather\, wear sturdy boots (waterproof a plus)\, bring water\, and a snack if you’d like. DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, May 16\, 5:45 pm – 6:45 pm  \nLeaders: Jeff Diez\, Katelin Kutella\, and Sarah Erskine\, UO Institute of Ecology and Evolution\, and Gail Baker\, Lane Community College Professor of Biology\nLocation: Riverfront property of UO Campus\, just southwest of the Frohnmayer Bridge along the Ruth Bascom Bike Path \nJoin UO ecologists Sarah Erskine\, Katelin Kutella\, Jeff Diez\, and Lane Community College Professor of Biology Gail Baker to tour a new ecological experiment embedded within public spaces in Eugene. The project is a collaboration between the UO researchers\, Eugene Public Parks\, and community naturalists (like you!?). The overall goal of the project is to better understand how climate affects plant phenology\, species interactions\, and the performance of our native prairie species. Expect to see blooms of Collinsia sp.\, popcorn flower\, and pink Plectritis sp. among others. By sowing mini-restoration experiments and collecting data on phenology\, species interactions\, and species performance\, the study aims to enhance local biodiversity in our public spaces and help inform future restoration efforts. Just head south until you can’t go any further\, and you have arrived. Parking is on-street. \nHugh Prichard\, co-owner with the city of Eugene\, will lead us on this tour on the Northwest corner of the Laurelwood Golf course. The Laurelwood Bog is a native plant project in its fourteenth year and has many mature plants with a forty-foot-tall Salix sp. and a ninebark tunnel arching over the pathways. Hugh has now planted over 110 species\, and over seventy-five should be identifiable on the day of the tour. Most are marked. Sign up here

DESCRIPTION:Friday\, April 19\, 7:00 pm *Note this is Friday\, not a Monday meeting.\nPresentation: The Master Melittologist Program’s Oregon Bee Atlas: A Statewide\nInitiative to Document the Floral Relations of Oregon’s Native Bee Fauna Using Community Scientists.\nSpeaker: Lincoln Best\, Faculty Research Assistant\, Oregon State University\nLocation: In Person\, 221 Allen Hall\, University of Oregon campus. Venue may change\, so check https://eugenenaturalhistorysociety.org/ to stay informed. \nLincoln will introduce the productive framework for education through the online Master Melittologist Program and data production for the Oregon Bee Atlas. These complementary programs have assessed native bee visitors to more than 1\,500 plant taxa in the state and have detected several hundred species of bees including new state records and new species. Using a combination of traditional morphological examination and DNA-barcoding to identify species continues to expand our knowledge of the state bee fauna. \nLincoln Best is the taxonomist for the Oregon Bee Atlas and collaborates on research with many other groups in the Pacific Northwest and internationally. He is most interested in faunistics and the floral relations of these amazing animals.

We will primarily see forest flora with the occasional rocky bald. It is a three-mile round-trip on an easy to moderate trail. Since parking at the East Trailhead is limited\, we’ll meet up two miles away at the Pisgah Public Market in Pleasant Hill and carpool from there. From southbound I-5\, take exit 188 for OR58 East\, “Oakridge-Klamath Falls\,” and continue on OR58 for just under four miles. The Pisgah Public Market is on the left as you enter Pleasant Hill. Hard to find\, largely subterranean and often rare\, these plants take extreme patience to study. Among the changes Alison and Adam have made that affect the Oregon flora are a reversion of North American native Orobanche to the genus Aphyllon (Adam) and description of new species and revision of existing species (Alison and Adam). This team will provide updates on these projects that affect the Oregon flora.

With rapidly increasing risk to forests and people from wildfire\, sustaining and restoring vegetation mosaics that include oak-pine savanna could be a key to both regional biodiversity conservation and reducing the risk of catastrophic fires.
