The project studies how climate impacts native prairie species and aims to enhance biodiversity and inform future restoration efforts. Her PhD work on kelp forests was conducted through the Department of Integrative Biology at Oregon State University. She has also studied spatial patterns in the effects of ocean acidification and hypoxia on commercially important shellfish species. She decided to leave academia to find new ways to use her scientific skills to help create healthier ocean ecosystems and communities. This is the fourth year of the project\, with the goal of removing non-native grasses and weeds on designated plots to allow the native plants to flourish. These wetlands are remnants of the wet prairies that used to cover our area and have significant native plants\, including two species with the largest populations anywhere in Eugene. \nThis month’s work party will focus on invasive plant removal. Tanya Harvey\, Bruce Newhouse\, and Ed Alverson will introduce you to the species that they proposed for listing\, detailing which habitats to look in and how to distinguish the species from look-alikes. \nThe R&E Committee convened a team of botanists in fall 2023 to review and add species to the outdated 2013 R&E plant list. The Emerald Chapter actively follows R&E plants in Lane County as doing so is critical to the preservation of rare plants and their habitats. The data for these plants are presented on our webpage under the Rare Plants section. Jenny Lippert will introduce this list and show how to quickly access the new R&E plant list and sortable table on our website. DESCRIPTION:Monday\, February 17\, 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm\nPresentation: Creating Backyard Habitat to Benefit Nature in our Yards and Community\nPresenter: Barbara Bryson\nLocation: Amazon Community Center\, 2700 Hilyard St.\, Eugene \nBarb Bryson is Director of Habitat Haven\, a backyard habitat certification program that began in May. Supported by grants from Upper Willamette Soil and Water District\, the program has attracted over seventy participants and is growing. She will discuss the rationale behind this program\, its components\, and how it works. We will look at examples of yards in our area that have been certified at various levels. \nBarb grew up in southeast Eugene\, playing in the forest pools and climbing tall Douglas-fir trees\, which led years later to a degree in Biology. After many moons raising children and working as a nurse practitioner\, she returned to bird watching in the pandemic\, read Douglas Tallamy’s book “Nature’s Best Hope\,” and realized her traditional gardening choices needed to change. She joined the board of Lane Audubon a couple of years ago. Gardening for birds and nature\, not just for beauty\, has become a passion.

DESCRIPTION:Monday\, January 20\, 7:00 pm – 8:00 pm\nTitle: Rivers to Ridges Partnership: Past\, Present\, and Future \nPresenter: Fraser McDonald\, Willamalane Parks and Recreation District\nLocation: Amazon Community Center\, 2700 Hilyard St.\, Eugene \nFraser is a natural resource planner at Willamalane Park and Recreation District in Springfield\, Oregon\, where he designs\, plans\, and implements natural resource management and recreation projects like trail planning and construction and habitat restoration. Prior to working for Willamalane\, he worked for Lane County Parks\, Lane Council of Governments\, Lane Community College\, and Long Tom Watershed Council. Fraser has a master’s degree in community and regional planning from University of Oregon and a B.S. in natural resource management from University of Nebraska-Lincoln. \nThe Rivers to Ridges Partnership is a voluntary partnership of nineteen organizations that work collaboratively to advance the protection\, restoration\, and effective management of park and open space resources in the southern Willamette Valley. Through the combined efforts of our partners\, a significant amount of what was envisioned in the 2003 Rivers to Ridges vision has been implemented\, and a “Vision Refresh” process was recently completed to look forward to what might be possible in our community moving forward over the next 20 years. Join Fraser MacDonald as he shares some of the exciting history of the partnership\, where it is headed in the next twenty years\, and what opportunities it might create for NPSO members.

SUMMARY:Presentation: What Does it Mean to be a Species in “the Paintbrushes?”
DESCRIPTION:Monday\, November 18\, 2024\, 7:00 pm – 8:00 pm \nTitle: What Does it Mean to be a Species in “the Paintbrushes?”\nPresenter: Dr. Sarah Jacobs\, a Specialist in our Western Flora\, Assistant Curator of Botany and Howell Chair of Western North American Botany California Academy of Sciences\nLocation: Via Zoom. For information\, please visit Events at: http://emerald. npsoregon.org. \nThe genus Castilleja\, also known as “the paintbrushes\,” is an iconic group of western wildflowers whose taxonomy has been historically challenging. My work aims to untangle species relationships to understand the evolution of this charismatic group of plants. My talk will cover what we do and don’t know about the biology\, physiology\, and evolution of Castilleja\, as well as how we are beginning to quantify exactly why these species are so hard to tell apart. Along the way\, we will ponder: What does it mean to be a species and how do we identify them? How do our expectations of species compare with what we see in the world around us? How does all this fit into our worldview of conservation and management? \nDr. Sarah Jacobs grew up in rural Arkansas and attended the University of Arkansas where she earned a bachelor’s degree in biology. A chance encounter in a plant diversity class led to volunteering and later a summer job at the University of Arkansas Herbarium\, which ultimately led to a master’s degree at Washington State University\, a brief stint with the U.S. Forest Service in Oregon\, and a PhD at the University of Idaho. Sarah worked with Dr. Felipe Zapata at University of California Los Angeles after graduating and accepted her current position at the California Academy of Sciences in 2019. She started her job in the fall of 2020 and has been building her research program since then. Herbaria and collections-based research have been central to developing her interests\, her studies\, and now her profession.

DESCRIPTION:Monday\, October 21\, 2024\, 7:00 pm – 8:00 pm \nPresentation: Climate Warming Effects on Pacific Northwest Prairie Species: Variable Phenological and Reproductive Response Among Species and Across the Landscape\nSpeaker: Sarah Erskine\, PhD candidate in the Institute of Ecology and Evolution\, University of Oregon\nLocation: Amazon Community Center\, 2700 Hilyard St.\, Eugene \nWhile climate change affects species in numerous ways\, one of the most observable effects is the shifting of phenological events\, such as the timing of germination or flowering. Increasing temperatures and drought have generally led to earlier leaf out and flowering times\, but there is also great variation in how species shift their phenology\, even among co-occurring species. This talk will describe how many of our local prairie wildflowers are shifting their life cycles with climate warming\, how these shifts vary across the landscape with environmental heterogeneity\, and how they may be connected to other plant responses to climate change. \nSarah Erskine is a PhD candidate in the Institute of Ecology and Evolution at the University of Oregon where she studies how climate warming restructures plant interactions through phenological shifts. Prior to graduate school\, she worked as a field ecologist and botanist all across the western U.S. from the Mojave Desert to the Oregon Coast Range surveying plants and pollinators. Her work in Pacific Northwest prairies has included surveying Taylor’s checkerspot and Fender’s blue butterflies and their host plants\, and her current research uses many annual flower species native to the Willamette Valley. She enjoys thinking about how plant communities will change with climate change and hopes to inform restoration efforts with her research.

DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, August 3\,  8:30 am – 5:30 pm\nField Trip: Gold Lake Bog\nLeaders: Jenny Moore\, Middle Fork District Botanist and Jenny Lippert\, Retired Forest Service Botanist \nJoin botanists Jenny Moore and Jenny Lippert for a foray into the botanical wonderland of Gold Lake Bog\, which was designated as a Research Natural Area in 1965. This area hosts several rare botanical species such as Rannoch-rush (Scheuchzeria palustris)\, several species of the carnivorous bladderworts (Utricularia intermedia\, U. minor\, and U. vulgaris)\, and other fun fen species such as sundews\, bog laurel\, bog birch\, and of course Sphagnum sp. moss. Bring a walking stick or poles if needed\, as we will be walking downhill from the trail into the bog and cross-country once there. Approximate roundtrip is 4 miles. Plan to get your feet wet or wear rubber boots. Bring a lunch and water\, and a sun hat as there is little shade. Sign up here

DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, June 29\, 9:00 am – 3:00 pm\nField Trip: Weiss Rd\, Prairie/Oak Area ACEC and Camas Swale RNA \nLeader: Ed Alverson \nJoin Ed Alverson to visit two adjacent Bureau of Land Management sites located about six miles southwest of Creswell to view the late spring/early summer flora. The Weiss Road Prairie-Oak-Pine Area of Critical Environmental Concern (ACEC) has a prairie/bald community with oaks and associated understory species. The nearby 314-acre Camas Swale Research Natural Area (RNA) has an old growth Douglas-fir forest plus a small (6 acre) prairie/bald community. More information on Camas Swale RNA can be found in the Guidebook Supplement at: https://www.fs.usda.gov/pnw/pubs/pnw_gtr843.pdf. \nThe outing will be a mix of walking on gravel roads through forest and some cross-country travel through forest for fifty to 100 yards to reach open meadows or balds. Participants should wear sturdy shoes\, and bring lunch\, water\, and sunscreen. DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, June 8\, 10:00 am – 11:30 am \nField Trip: Turtle Flats\nLeaders: Jared Tarr\, Intern and Volunteer Coordinator\, Friends of Buford Park and Mt Pisgah\, and Dave Predeek \nJoin Jared and Dave for a 1.5 hour walk of Turtle Flats with an optional work party extension. Participants will see the transformation from gravel pits to restored wetland habitat with plenty of native plant species. The work party runs until noon\, so attendees can get in a half hour burst of service work if they so desire. \nWe will be traversing some uneven ground\, but primarily be on gravel roads/paths for a ~.75 mile out-and-back. Participants should dress for the weather\, wear sturdy boots (waterproof a plus)\, bring water\, and a snack if you’d like. Friends will supply any tools and gloves needed. \nMeet at the gated area on Franklin Blvd East\, just past the railroad trestle and across from the Emerald People’s Utility District building.
