friends of the oregon flora project

There are over 4,500 species, subspecies, and varieties of plants that grow without cultivation in Oregon. However, complete and up-to-date information about our flora is simply not available. The last flora to cover the entire state (Peck's Manual of the Higher Plants of Oregon) was published in 1961. Since that time, research and extensive botanizing have widened the gap between our knowledge and our available resources.

The Oregon Flora Project is a statewide effort to produce references on Oregon's plants that are useful for both the amateur and the professional. Headquartered at Oregon State University, the Oregon Flora Project has four major facets. These are: the Checklist, which establishes a consistent nomenclature for all species, subspecies, and varieties of plants; the Plant Atlas, which allows users to create customized distribution maps; the Photo Gallery, with multiple images of each taxon; and a new Flora, or plant identification manual. Work is progressing on each facet, and as it is developed it will become available on the Oregon Flora Project website.

NPSO is pleased to sponsor the Oregon Flora Project, and has established the Friends of the Oregon Flora Project as a committee to raise funds for and increase awareness of the Project. Annual membership in the Friends is a wonderful way to support this work, and entitles you to a subscription to the Oregon Flora Newsletter.
